Although occasionally making use of maquettes or clay models, the Studio has a strong tradition of direct carving working directly on the stone or wood after preliminary drawings. This demands a fine balance between the freedom to adapt and change the work as it progresses against the risk that proportions and other details may be lost.
We often say that the work is finished before we start! The ability to sculpt directly into the stone or wood means that a mental concept of of the piece aimed for must be held in the mind while it is simply revealed by removing material that is hiding it.
